AI Maturity Model

A quick baseline for understanding where individuals, teams or the whole organisation currently stand with AI. Identify where you are, set targets by role and team, and track progress over time.

5 dimensions 5 maturity levels ~5 minutes Open to everyone, including those not yet using AI

How it works

For each of five dimensions, choose the description that most accurately reflects where you are right now. No numbers to assign. The description either matches your situation or it does not.

How to use it

Use as an all-staff baseline. Set targets by team and role — for example, AI Committee at L4, all staff at L3, digital team at L4–5. Rerun quarterly to track progress.

The five stages

The stages describe recognisable points in the journey of working with AI. Most people and organisations sit somewhere between stages rather than neatly at one point. The profile across all five dimensions is usually more useful than the overall stage number.

Five dimensions of AI maturity

Each dimension is assessed independently, showing where development is uneven.

Tool Familiarity
Which AI platforms are used regularly and how well understood across the team.
Prompting Confidence
How structured and deliberate the approach to briefing AI is — from ad hoc requests to systematic instruction design.
Workflow Integration
How deeply AI is embedded in regular processes versus used for occasional standalone tasks.
Legal and Ethical Awareness
Understanding of data protection, consent, bias and responsible use as they apply to AI.
Strategic Vision
How clearly AI fits into the organisation’s strategic direction — from peripheral tool to embedded capability informing decisions.
Maturity profile

Tracking your progress

Use your maturity code to track how your profile changes across quarters. Share it with colleagues or a facilitator as a starting point for planning.

Maturity disclosure code
Record alongside capability and wellbeing codes in your AI governance log. Format: MAT-L[overall] | TF:L[n] PC:L[n] WI:L[n] LE:L[n] SV:L[n]. Use this code to track progress across quarters.
